Ras is running for Governor of New Jersey because he believes in the potential of this great state. He believes we have stagnated, unable to truly tackle our challenges - affordability, housing, segregation, education, healthcare and public transportation - because our leaders are unwilling to think big, to challenge the social and political norms, or reimagine who it is the state should serve.
Before he was the Mayor of New Jersey’s largest city, Ras J. Baraka was a poet, an activist, a coach, a mentor, a teacher, and a principal. He’s also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha - America’s first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men.
Ras was born and raised in New Jersey. He’s a kid from Newark who grew up to transform the city he loves through creativity, compassion and imagination.
